In Indonesia lie two of the world’s biodiversity hotspots. Communities in Indonesia rely on the rich biodiversity of the region, but industries are posing a threat by cutting down the forests that surrounding life relies on.

As deforestation increases in Indonesia for commodities like palm oil, pulp and paper, and nickel, the impact on wildlife has been immense. It’s estimated more than 100,000 orangutans have been lost in Borneo and Sumatra to commodity-linked deforestation.

Our work in Indonesia is where we first tested our “perfect storm” approach a decade ago, successfully driving transformative change in the palm oil sector. Palm oil is historically the biggest driver of deforestation in Indonesia. We pressured companies like Korindo and POSCO Daewoo to stop deforestation in forest frontiers like Papua and Borneo. Our Rapid Response system pushes players in the palm oil industry to respond faster to deforestation in their supply chain and to maintain the No Deforestation, No Peatland development, and No Exploitation (NDPE) policies that most have committed to.
