Mining and Infrastructure

While mining has traditionally had a smaller footprint than agriculture, its impacts on communities can be devastating.  Infrastructure projects throughout the tropics open up new areas to deforestation and habitat degradation.  Mighty Earth works to address the impacts of infrastructure and mining projects in select cases throughout the world.

We’re holding companies accountable for deforestation done to access minerals such as nickel and bauxite, a precursor for aluminum. We’re working to stop projects like the Batang Toru Dam which is being built right in the middle of the Tapanuli orangutan’s habitat in Indonesia – threatening the survival of the world’s most endangered species of great ape.

Protecting the world’s rarest great ape

The Tapanuli is threatened by the construction of a huge dam project which is slicing through its home in the Batang Toru forest in Sumatra, fragmenting populations and lessening its ability to sustain the level of genetic diversity needed to remain viable.

Nickel and Electric Vehicles

EVs will help stop the worst of the climate crisis – if we can find a better way to build them. But sourcing minerals that are needed to run EVs in a responsible manner has proven to be a challenge.
