  • Supporting partners in conducting routine satellite monitoring using GIS and remote sensing tools to identify and analyze recent and ongoing cases of deforestation, natural ecosystem conversion, monoculture expansion, and other environmental threats linked to commodity expansion.
  • Building strong and regular relationships with partners on the ground, and supporting capacity building, including training team members and partners in geospatial analysis, supply chain investigation, and case development.
  • Supporting in-depth research on deforestation cases, including corporate ownership and control structures, and the production of technical reports, blogs, and updates to tools such as the Soy and Cattle Deforestation Monitor.

Other activities include:

  • Working with the wider Nature & Deforestation team at Mighty Earth to develop campaigns targeting corporate actors driving deforestation in the region, as well as campaigns promoting forest and ecosystem conservation and restoration.
  • Supporting engagement with private sector companies, civil society organizations, and other key stakeholders in Latin America and globally.
  • Contributing to the development and submission of complaints through company grievance mechanisms and independent certification bodies.

Note: Responsibilities may vary depending on your expertise and background and may include a combination of the above.

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • At least 3+ years of experience in cartography (GIS), supply chain investigations, and campaign or investigative work related to deforestation, natural ecosystem conversion, and corporate accountability in soy and/or cattle supply chains.

Context

The meat industry is the largest single driver of destruction of rainforests and other ecosystems and causes more pollution than all the world’s cars, trucks, planes, and ships combined. Largely because of the meat industry, only 4% of mammal biomass on the planet are wild animals, a serious imbalance in the planet.  The meat products that make their way onto the shelves of global supermarket chains are linked to large industrial meat and feed companies that have extensive records of deforestation, land grabs, habitat destruction, human rights violations and other irresponsible agricultural practices.

Large, multi-national retailers are uniquely positioned to play a large role in driving a shift in the way the world gets its protein because of their position in the global market, often seen as a leader in sustainable practices and a potential trailblazer for much-needed switch to plant-based and alternative protein-based foods. They are key customers for many of the world’s major meat and soy companies and could drive an urgent industry-wide shift of their suppliers to better practices, zero deforestation as well as more sustainable protein sources.
