At a Mighty Earth event at COP30, Marfrig disclosed its methane emissions and outlined a methane reduction plan, including an absolute methane reduction target of 33% by 2035

BELÉM, BRAZIL — Today at a Mighty Earth event at the Super Pollutant Solutions Pavilion at COP30, Marfrig became the world’s first meat company to disclose its Scope 3 methane emissions and outline a methane reduction strategy, including a methane reduction target of 33% by 2035.

Whilst falling short of the target set by the UN under the Global Methane Pledge, which outlines a 30% reduction in 2030, Marfrig should be commended for delivering an ambitious methane reduction target.

Paulo Pianez, Marfrig’s Global Sustainability Director said:

Mighty Earth’s COP30 event

“We have a target to reduce our methane emissions by 33% in Scope 3 by 2035, and to disclose methane. Around 98% of our Scope 3 emissions come from methane generated by enteric fermentation, and this will be measured and demonstrated separately. This makes our disclosure more transparent.”

“The idea is to show that it is possible to do this, and Marfrig is doing it. Now we must engage the whole sector and together we can really make a difference to the big, global challenge that we have.”

Gemma Hoskins, Global Climate Director at Mighty Earth said:

“Marfrig setting a methane reduction target at COP30 is a world first for a meat company and we commend Marfrig’s transparency and accountability in setting this necessary target.”

“While not aligned with the Global Methane Pledge of 30% by 2030, this is a crucial step in the right direction and much needed at this critical time in tackling global heating.”

“This is just the beginning. There is a lot more work to be done to curb methane emissions, and we’re calling on the rest of the field to follow suit, particularly super polluters such as JBS.”

Notes to editors:

Methane matters

Methane is a climate superheater with a greenhouse gas warming effect 86 times greater than CO2 and is responsible for 30% of the world’s heating since the industrial revolution. It’s short-lived, staying in the atmosphere for about 12 years, meaning rapid cuts to methane emissions would slow global heating.

  • Mighty Earth will publish an assessment of some of the worlds more prominent meat companies by December 1st 2025.
  • Mighty Earth is calling on other major meat companies to follow the leadership set by Marfrig and publish methane emissions and a methane reduction plan.
