Nippon Steel’s $350 Million Gary Works Investment Locks In Dirty Coal for Decades
Nippon has announced the return to service of Blast Furnace #14 at its Gary Works facility in Indiana, following completion of a $350 million reline project.
Responding to the announcement, Matthew Groch, Senior Director of Decarbonization at Mighty Earth, said:
“Nippon Steel celebrating the reline of Blast Furnace 14 is the ultimate irony. After grand promises to modernize U.S. Steel, its first major investment doubles down on an outdated coal-based blast furnace at a facility linked to as many as 114 premature deaths and 31,000 asthma symptoms every year. Instead of investing in cleaner steelmaking, Nippon is locking Gary Works into decades more pollution. If millions of tons of steel come at the cost of human lives and a hotter planet, Nippon needs to answer : How much dirty steel is a Gary resident’s life worth?”
