The global automotive industry is undergoing a profound transformation. While electric vehicles (EVs) have dominated headlines as the pathway to decarbonizing transportation, a new frontier has emerged: building the clean vehicles of the future with sustainable materials.

Mighty Earth’s Matthew Groch writes that steel sits at the heart of this shift, and is becoming a decisive battleground in the race toward truly sustainable vehicles.

The 2026 Lead the Charge Leaderboard shows that momentum is building in this arena as automakers look for ways to differentiate themselves in an increasingly crowded EV market. A handful of automakers – most notably Volvo and Mercedez-Benz – have emerged as early frontrunners, and others – such as Hyundai Motor Company – are lagging behind.
