Roger Smith is Japan Director for Mighty Earth and works to support Japan’s clean energy transition and help companies achieve deforestation-free supply chains. Since 2019 he has led a campaign targeting Sumitomo Corporation to move away from coal and destructive biomass. Additionally, Smith has helped increase awareness of the problems with cocoa production in Japan and coordinated the Japan release of the chocolate scorecard since 2021. He has also been active on steel and heavy industry, serving as Mighty Earth’s representative to ResponsibleSteel and negotiating aspects of the standard for steel in regard to the greenhouse gases and responsible sourcing of materials in 2022. Smith has worked in Japan since 2014, when he moved to the northeastern Tohoku region promote the reconstruction following the devastating earthquake and tsunami.
