Mariana is a Brazilian independent consultant dedicated to the social, economic and political aspects of agriculture and livestock chains, their impact to the environment and to local communities. She joined Mighty Earth in August 2022, working in projects and campaigns against deforestation and for the protection of Amazon indigenous lands.
Before, she collaborated to the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD), the Environment & Trade Hub of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations (IDDRI), the Brazilian Center of Analysis and Planning (CEBRAP), The Donkey Sanctuary, the Brazilian National Forum for Animal Protection and Defense, the Bradesco Foundation, among others. Putting research and consultancy activities in dialogue, she has been working on topics like the international trade of commodities, sustainability, deforestation, animal welfare, human and land rights, human-animal relations, biodiversity conservation, rural development, traceability, South-North/South-South relations.
With a PhD in Sociology and postdoc positions in Veterinary and Social Anthropology, Mariana strongly relies on field research and qualitative methods applied to Latin American and African contexts. Talking to people from diverse backgrounds and discovering their strategies for daily life is the favorite part of her work.Her aim is to contribute to build more harmonious relations between people, animals and the environment surrounding them. She is currently based in Brazil and loves to share time with her two lovely teen kids.
