The Chicago Tribune covered a series of U.S. EPA hearings where Northwest Indiana residents and advocates pushed back against delayed deadlines for hazardous air pollution rules for steel and coke facilities.

Mighty Earth’s Indiana Director Michael Oles testified that coke oven emissions are “among some of the most toxic air pollutants,” citing research linking exposure to cancer, heart attacks, and other serious health issues. He urged the EPA to finalize strong rules that would lower emissions and protect public health, especially for fenceline communities in Gary and the surrounding region.
