Washington, DC – Mighty Earth has published a report shedding light on deforestation hotspots within Ghana in close proximity to the purchasing points of major cocoa traders. This report marks the first in a series aimed at applying Mighty Earth’s renowned “Rapid Response” methodology to the cocoa industry in Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire.

The report reveals alarming cases of deforestation potentially linked to the cocoa supply chains of several large traders and manufacturers operating in Ghana. By analyzing publicly-available supply chain data and utilizing advanced geospatial techniques, Mighty Earth identified deforestation risk zones around warehouses and cooperatives within a 15km radius. These findings underscore the urgent need for industry-wide action to establish fully traceable and transparent cocoa supply chains.

Importantly, Mighty Earth has engaged directly with each company implicated in the report, fostering constructive dialogue and advocating for increased transparency and accountability. As a result of this collaboration, Mighty Earth has updated its methodology to enhance accuracy and comprehensiveness for future iterations of the report; company responses are included where appropriate.

“This report serves as a wake-up call for the cocoa industry,” said Jackson Harris, Rapid Response Manager at Mighty Earth. “We urge companies to take immediate steps to address deforestation within their supply chains and commit to transparent sourcing practices. By working together, we can safeguard precious forest ecosystems and ensure a sustainable future for cocoa production.”

Mighty Earth remains committed to monitoring and advocating for responsible environmental practices within the cocoa industry, with forthcoming reports underway to assess progress and identify areas for improvement.
