Boris Patentreger, Senior Director for France at Mighty Earth said:
“Infighting across EU member states shows the strength of opposition to the Mercosur deal, leading to another delay in ratifying this toxic trade deal.”
“This agreement has been 25 years in the making, but the world is in a very different place now with deforestation massively impacting extreme weather events with catastrophic results and tragic loss of life.”
“In its current form, especially with the EUDR being delayed, the Mercosur deal will create a surge of cheap meat imports from countries such as Brazil, where it would increase beef production and further exacerbate deforestation.¨
“It’s estimated 150 million trees will be cut down if this deal goes ahead, threatening the lives and livelihoods of Indigenous and traditional communities, while releasing huge amounts of climate-wrecking carbon into the atmosphere.”
“Now, more than ever we need to keep forests standing and to protect people and planet. We hope clear heads prevail over the holiday period and that policymakers realise this deal must be scrapped.”
