Mighty Earth responds as GM shareholders again vote down proposal for greater transparency on decarbonizing steel and aluminum.
Today, at the General Motors’ Annual General Meeting, shareholders voted down a shareholder proposal from Green Century Capital Management, Inc, that called for greater transparency around the company’s efforts to decarbonize its steel and aluminum supply chains.
The proposal called on the automaker to “produce forward-looking disclosures demonstrating whether its existing policies and actions are aligned with its zero emissions ambition,” for its steel and aluminum. Additionally, the proposal called on GM to enhance transparency around the company’s strategies to meet its First Movers Coalition (FMC) commitments, including buying at least 10% low-carbon primary steel and aluminum by 2030.
In this year’s Lead the Charge Leaderboard, GM ranked 7th overall out of 18 companies examined and trailed behind other American companies such as Tesla (ranked #1) and Ford (ranked #2). The Leaderboard evaluates 18 of the world’s leading automakers on their efforts to eliminate emissions, environmental harm, and human rights violations from their supply chains.
In response to the vote, Matthew Groch, Senior Director for Decarbonization at Mighty Earth said:
“For the third year in a row, General Motors’ leadership has encouraged investors to vote against a proposal calling for transparency around decarbonizing its steel and aluminum. While other American and European automakers are racing towards the future of low-carbon steel and aluminum, GM seems content being stuck in neutral. With GM’s 2030 First Movers Coalition commitments looming, we’d expect the company to get serious about its ‘Journey to Zero’ and not just continue to greenwash its inaction on the climate.”
