The European Commission is set to launch a draft delegated act for consultation in the coming weeks which, pursuant to Article 34.1 of the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), will propose amendments to the list of commodities and products within the EUDR’s scope. The exclusion of books under the December simplification has set a troubling precedent, emboldening the leather industry to ramp up its lobbying efforts and intensify pressure on policymakers to secure the exclusion of leather. Notably, this demand has been supported by countries such as Italy, the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Isabel Fernandez, Senior Adviser at Mighty Earth said:

“To ensure the integrity of the EUDR, leather must remain in the legislation with decisions guided by the wealth of scientific evidence that shows the environmental destruction of the industry. Europe cannot cave in to the carve-out demands driven by the leather lobby.”
